Written in response to ‘The Lamp of Sacrifice’ by Nathan Coley, exhibited in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (seen 10/4/2017).

There were 286 places of worship
in the 2004 Edinburgh Yellow Pages
that Nathan Coley built with cardboard
standing, at tallest, three feet high,
without gilt.

A child got on hands and knees
to look in the open window of St Cuthberts
and ask if there were people inside.

But all their lamps were unlit
and a thousand rams with rivers of olive oil
were unheard before the exalted God.

Cardboard burns at 800 degrees.
